Fewer-Calorie & Sugar-Free
Sorbitol, a naturally occurring sweetener found in various fruits, offers sweetness with a clean refreshing taste while providing fewer calories than sugar (approximately 2.4 calories per gram). Also known as glucitol, sorbitol is a sugar alcohol that is commonly used as a sugar substitute in various foods and beverages. It is slowly metabolised by the body making it a low glycemic index sweetener. This make it an option for those following a low-carb diet, under the guidance of their healthcare professionals, as it has minimal impact on carbohydrate intake. Additionally sorbitol does not contribute to the development of dental caries.
Premium Quality
While it occurs naturally in a wide array of fruits, commercial production of sorbitol involves the hydrogenation of glucose resulting in both liquid and crystalline powder forms. Our premium quality sorbitol powder is manufactured in Germany from wheat or corn (maize), and it conveniently comes in 300kg and 1kg resealable tubes making it easy to use in home or commercial applications.
Daily Intake
Sorbitol has received recognition as Generally Recognised As Safe (GRAS) by the UK, US FDA, and holds approvals for use in the EU, as well as in numerous countries worldwide including Australia, Canada, and Japan.
Excessive consumption of polyols, such as sorbitol, may induce laxative effects. It is recommended to limit your daily sorbitol intake to levels below 20g-30g to avoid undesirable effects as overconsumption, particularly 50g or more per day, may induce gastrointestinal discomfort, especially in children. Additionally, individuals who are intolerant to fructose may choose to avoid sorbitol as it is metabolised into fructose.
Uses
Baking: Use it as a sugar substitute in baking recipes. Sorbitol is approximately 60% as sweet as sugar, so you may need to use a little more to achieve the desired sweetness. It has a lower melting point than sugar so it may affect the texture of baked goods slightly. It attracts and retains moisture, enhancing texture and shelf life in baked goods and confections.
Sweetening drinks: Use it to sweeten drinks like coffee, tea, and smoothies. It dissolves easily and has a clean, sweet taste.
Adding moisture to baked goods: Sorbitol is a hygroscopic substance, meaning it absorbs and retains moisture. This can be useful in baked goods as it can help keep them moist and freshness for longer.
Making sugar-free syrups and glazes: Use it to make sugar-free syrups and glazes for cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and other desserts. It’s an option for people who are looking to reduce their sugar intake.
Making low-calorie or sugar-free ice cream: Sorbitol can be used as a sugar substitute in homemade ice cream recipes to create a lower-calorie or sugar-free treat. It can also help prevent ice crystals from forming, resulting in a smoother, creamier texture.
Pharmaceutical Applications: Also being pharmaceutical-grade, this sorbitol can be used in creams and gels for topical formulations, as a coating agent in tablets, or as a palatability and stability enhancer in oral solutions, suspensions and chewable medications.
